Henry and his cat will be one of the photos featured in the “Favourite Signs” book. Apparently children with cats are very difficult to capture. I had two adorable dog photos that pretty much fell on my lap so I needed to capture some cats. After a couple unsuccessful tries I understand why there aren’t many professional photos of children with cats…it’s nearly impossible!
Thank goodness my dear friend Amber is a photographer! She took this photo of her son Henry and sent it to me. Amber Bond lives in Ontario now but she was the one of the first photographers to help with Little Signing Stars. When Amber lived in Winnipeg she took numerous photos for our personalized booklets. I remember one time Amber and I were travelling between classes together when my car broke down. That was the first time I ever saw someone use a smart phone! We were going to be late for our next sign language class at a community center and I didn’t have their phone number so I was in a panic. She quickly “googled” the name of the community center and called them within a minute. Oh my! I was really impressed. How times have changed!
It was a pleasure having Henry as part of our class as well! Amber was a big support to Little Signing Stars by telling many friends and clients about the program. She loved coming to class with Henry and wanted to share her experience with others. I’m truly blessed to have so many parents refer the classes to their friends and family. It really is an honour!

Our books have been sent to the printers and we recently received a few expedited copies in the mail. I’m so thankful for such a supportive family that helped me along the way. The rest of the shipment is coming in 2-4 weeks so we’re planning a ‘Book Release Party’ on July 27. (Faith’s birthday and mine too!)
The photos below were taken almost 2 years apart. The first photo is for the “read a book” page and the second photo is our family enjoying the final product – our book!! It’s so rewarding to say “we finished what we started”.
My husband, Calvin, is a middle years math/science teacher. He was the computer guy and the most essential piece to these books. Without Calvin’s support I couldn’t have done it – period. Countless times I wanted changes done to the pages and he told me it was impossible but somehow, someway… he pulled it off. Hours and hours spend on minor details. Sometimes after all that work I would have to admit that we couldn’t use a certain photo, background or layout. He generously gave up his time and modeled dedication to our girls. I’m so thankful for him!
Our girls were quick to offer suggestions and tips for every page. They were really part of this whole process. We prayed every evening for Faith’s kidney transplant and our books to be completed. The goal was for the books to be done in September then before Christmas then spring – now it’s June and they are finally done just waiting for the entire shipment to arrive! Only God knew the right time. Unknown to us we officially submitted the books to the printer the same day Faith’s parents got “the call” for a kidney. Thankful for answered prayer!

Baby Sign Language – in action!
These children were booked together for a photo session. They were all between 18 months – 2 years old so it was quite the juggling act trying to capture a sign. We had 3 signs left to finish the book so we tried all 3 signs with all 3 children. After lots of bribing and laughter we did end up getting a couple different combinations that I could use for the book. This is NOT the combination I decided to use but they are so cute I wanted to post them! I’ll leave the other photos as a surprise. We’re planning a book party on July 27, 2015 once all our shipment has arrived. We have expedited a few books so we will auction one copy on Friday, June 19. Stay tuned on Little Signing Stars facebook page or the home page of our website. www.littlesigningstars.ca

Bubbles are a highlight in our Little Signing Stars class so I wanted to incorporate them in the baby signing book. These girls are so sweet! Big sister Ilyana took classes in my first year of teaching baby signing. After Ilyana “graduated” from the tot program I didn’t see the family for a couple years until the day we bumped into each other at the hairdressers! My daughters were getting their hair curled for the very first signing “photo shoot”. Monica, their mom, was pregnant at the time so I told her about our book project. The girls enjoyed a little “playdate” together while we waited. (see picture of the girls below)
Months later I bumped into them again at the mall. I was specifically going to buy bubbles for yet another photo shoot and they were heading to the same exact same store! It was perfect timing because I really needed a baby for the photo shoot. There was another baby planning to come but she ended up being sick – so the photographer was booked for our “last session” and I needed a baby!! Thankfully they were willing and available! Monica – you deserved a HUGE ‘thank you’! Only you and I know the full story on these photos…no one else would believe it!
September rolled around and these girls attended a 10 week baby session. I thoroughly enjoyed having their enthusiam each class. Baby sister Bianca is now 18 months. Her new word is “bubbles” – how perfect! Can’t wait to get the book into their hands! 500 copies are set to arrive in late July. We’ve expedited a few copies and hope to auction one off next week to raise funds for Faith Konitz who is recovering from a kidney transplant. Read the story, click here.
